Education Assistance Program
The education of the community is one of AKL’s main concerns.
In Haiti 95% of parents must pay tuition.
“90% of primary schools are non-public and managed by private sector, religious organizations or NGOs“ (USAID 2014). “50 percent of children do not attend school” (World Bank, 2013). “Only 29 percent of Haitians 25 and above attended secondary school” (USAID, 2015). ”Haiti has a 61% literacy rate which is 64% males and 57% females” (CIA Factbook, Nov 2015).
According to UNICEF, more than 500,000 children in Haiti between the ages of 5-18 do not have the means to attend school, and more than a million will drop out without terminating school because of lack of tuition funds. In addition, the unstable political nature of the country and constant catastrophic natural disasters make the situation extra complex. Baie-de-Henne is a community in Haiti that is affected.
The Education Assistance Program (EAP) provides tuition assistance to students who need it the most. This is done by working directly with school officials, parents, and students in the community.
Annually AKL distribute school supplies such as note books, book bags, pens, pencils, and so on.
AKL welcomes all students to use its computer lab and internet at its local center for homework and research purposes daily.
AKL also provide tutoring after school for all students who need extra help.
