Demen Ka Miyò (A Better Tomorrow)

Article 22 of Haiti’s 1987 amended constitution states that: “The state recognizes the right of every citizen to adequate housing, education, food, health, and social security” “Adequate Housing is a universal human right and should be at the center of the urban policy and the physical center of the city”(UN officials, 2016)

With an increasing population, social instability, and a constant pattern of natural disasters, the deteriorating housing sector in Haiti have suffered. Political crisis, economical crisis meet with hurricanes, and earthquakes have put the country on its knees. Within 13 years Haiti was struck by four major earthquakes (February 2023, August 2021, October 2018, and January 2010) and countless of tropical storms that destroyed more than 700 thousand houses, and left millions of families in homelessness. Baie-de-Henne is one of the communities that have been affected severely because of its coastal location.

To combat housing degradation, AKL establishes the “Demen Ka Miyò” (A better tomorrow) program. This program is dedicated to assist the community in rebuilding.

To the most vulnerable families and those with homes that have been destroyed trough natural disaster, AKL will donate construction materials such as cement bags, sand, rebar, woods, paint, metal tiles and more to help build a descent home.
